AI Supercomputing: Doudna System Accelerates Scientific Discovery | NERSC & Dell (2025)

The world of scientific discovery is undergoing a seismic shift, fueled by the powerful combination of Artificial Intelligence and supercomputing. But how is this happening, and what does it mean for the future of research?

This transformation is vividly illustrated by the collaboration between the National Energy Research Scientific Computing Center (NERSC) at Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory and Dell Technologies Inc. Their partnership has birthed Doudna, a cutting-edge system designed to revolutionize complex scientific workflows. This isn't just an upgrade; Doudna promises a tenfold increase in performance, a game-changer for researchers.

Sudip Dosanjh, the scientific division director of NERSC, and Tony Rea, the global AI infrastructure lead at Dell, recently discussed their collaboration. Dosanjh emphasized the importance of bringing NERSC's vast user community of over 11,000 users along with them as they deploy new systems. The deployment of Doudna, slated for the end of 2026, relies heavily on close collaboration with Dell and Nvidia, given the numerous new capabilities it unlocks.

During an exclusive broadcast on theCUBE, SiliconANGLE Media's livestreaming studio, Dosanjh and Rea spoke with Dave Vellante and Jackie McGuire. They delved into how AI is reshaping scientific discovery and the intricacies of the NERSC-Dell partnership. This conversation highlights a crucial point: the ability to process and analyze massive amounts of data is now paramount in scientific research.

Changing the Pace of Scientific Discovery

NERSC is evolving beyond its traditional focus on modeling and simulation. Scientists are now grappling with an explosion of data, opening up unprecedented possibilities. Doudna's primary goal is to harmonize these vast datasets, with a strong emphasis on orchestrating complex workflows, according to Rea.

"One of the things this machine's going to be able to do is digest enormous amounts of data," Rea explained. "The granularity and the resolution is going up and the amount of information is going up by an enormous amount every year."

But here's where it gets interesting: Doudna is built on Nvidia's Vera Rubin platform, housed within Dell's IR7000 rack, and is water-cooled for sustainability. NERSC is also implementing dry chillers, which, while slightly less energy-efficient, significantly conserve water—a critical consideration for their Northern California location. This is a great example of how technology can be developed and used in a more sustainable way.

As with many modern technological advancements, AI is at the heart of Doudna. Dosanjh highlights the focus on using machine analytics for real-time data analysis. "It's not just about AI," he stated. "It's really about these very complex workflows that they want to run because they may want to transfer the data, run a simulation at the same time to help steer their experiment. They want feedback in real time." For example, imagine a telescope needing to refocus rapidly or an experiment needing immediate adjustments based on incoming data. This is where AI-driven analysis becomes invaluable.

This collaboration between Dell and NERSC signifies a significant shift in the industry. Dosanjh and Rea agree that the pace of scientific discovery is accelerating, and AI and data analysis are major contributors to this momentum.

"The barrier of entry to do scientific research is much lower now," Rea noted. "At NERSC … they’re doing a lot to enable the researchers to be more productive, to understand how to better use these machines."

And this is the part most people miss: the democratization of scientific research. The tools are becoming more accessible, empowering researchers to be more productive and innovative.

Do you think this increased accessibility will lead to even more groundbreaking discoveries? What other challenges do you foresee in the future of scientific research? Share your thoughts in the comments below!
