Get ready for a captivating journey into the world of Bird Grove, a captivating new play that will leave you questioning everything!
A Tale of Self-Discovery and Breaking Free
In 1841, Mary Ann Evans, a young woman of marriageable age, finds herself at a crossroads. Her father, Robert, has moved them to Bird Grove House with a singular purpose: to find her a suitable husband through the local church. But Mary Ann, with her remarkable intellect and growing self-confidence, is not one to conform easily.
As she delves into new books and forms friendships with local radicals, Mary Ann's mind begins to buzz with progressive ideas that challenge the very beliefs her father holds dear. She finds it increasingly difficult to accept the rules and expectations of her world, leading to bitter conflicts with the man she adores.
But is this the only path forward? Can she break free from societal conventions, find her unique voice, and become the writer she was always meant to be?
A Play That Dares to Ask
Alexi Kaye Campbell's witty and thought-provoking play, Bird Grove, dares to explore these questions. It delves into the untold story of one of England's greatest writers, George Eliot (Mary Ann Evans), in a poignant and powerful way.
Bird Grove asks us to consider how we can coexist with those whose beliefs differ from our own. It's a timely and relevant exploration of family, self-determination, and the power of individual voices.
A Creative Team to Impress
The play is brought to life by an impressive creative team. Alexi Kaye Campbell, known for his Olivier Award-winning play The Pride, has crafted a compelling narrative. Anna Ledwich, who has previously directed at Hampstead Theatre, returns to direct this world premiere.
