Rally Saudi Arabia Day 2 Highlights: Pajari's Fight for the Lead! (2025)

The Battle for the Lead: Rally Saudi Arabia Day 2

Get ready for an intense rally battle as TOYOTA GAZOO Racing World Rally Team's Sami Pajari is giving it his all to stay at the front of the pack! With the championship title on the line, his teammates are hot on his trail, creating an exciting race for position.

After an action-packed first day in Saudi Arabia, crews ventured into the mountains and deserts on Thursday. The loose sandy terrain presented a unique challenge, with each car leaving a cleaner path for those following. Pajari, fresh from his debut podium at Rally Japan, seized the opportunity, starting strongly in the dunes of Al Faisaliyah and maintaining his momentum throughout the morning.

He claimed third overall in the morning and even managed to secure a stage win in the final test of the loop, Khulais. Pajari's performance continued to impress in the afternoon, edging ahead of Adrien Fourmaux (Hyundai) for second place in the first stage. Another stage win followed in the second pass of the Moon Stage, putting him in the rally lead. However, an unfortunate tyre damage incident in the final gravel stage of the day cost him valuable time, dropping him back to second.

As the day came to a close, Pajari found himself just 6 seconds behind Fourmaux. Running ahead on the road, Takamoto Katsuta had a steady day, avoiding major issues and securing a top six position.

But here's where it gets controversial... The three drivers vying for the championship title, Elfyn Evans, Sébastien Ogier, and Kalle Rovanperä, faced the brunt of the road cleaning challenge due to their positions at the front. Al Faisaliyah offered some relief, allowing Ogier to set two third-fastest times and finish the day at the head of the trio. Rovanperä, who suffered tyre damage in SS4, managed to regain his position ahead of Evans in the last gravel stage.

And this is the part most people miss... The impact of road cleaning was more significant than expected, with the rough terrain creating an evolving road surface. This made it difficult for drivers to gauge their performance accurately.

Juha Kankkunen, Deputy Team Principal, summed up the day: "It's been an interesting day with constant changes. Our championship contenders had a tough time cleaning the road, but they created great lines for the rest. Tomorrow's starting order will be different, so it's anyone's game."

Elfyn Evans shared his thoughts: "It was a tough day. I was too cautious in the first stage, but my pace improved after that. The cleaning effect was dramatic, and it's challenging to judge your driving when the road keeps changing."

Kalle Rovanperä added: "Today was tough, but it's the same for everyone. The tyre damage in the morning cost us time and starting positions for tomorrow. The cleaning effect is even greater than we thought, so tomorrow will be another challenge."

Sébastien Ogier reflected: "It was a challenging day as expected, with a massive cleaning effect. I tried to push in the smoother sections and gain time. I think we did well, considering our position. The main goal is to stay ahead of Elfyn and Kalle, and we'll keep pushing tomorrow."

Takamoto Katsuta commented: "It was a tough day as expected, but the team did a great job to keep us comfortable. We focused on avoiding mistakes and punctures. I'd like to be higher, but there's still a long way to go."

Sami Pajari expressed his satisfaction: "It's been a positive day. Taking stage wins and consistently staying close to the top is great. The tyre issue in the last gravel stage was a pity, but we're still close to the lead. Tomorrow will be longer, and we'll aim to continue our performance."
