Get ready for an exciting journey into the world of racing! The NTT INDYCAR SERIES is back, and two veteran drivers, Scott Dixon and Alexander Rossi, are thrilled to be part of it.
Testing, often seen as a mundane task, takes on a whole new meaning when it involves these experienced racers. Dixon, a six-time series champion, and Rossi, a winner at the prestigious Indianapolis 500, were all smiles as they geared up to test Firestone tires at Phoenix Raceway. But here's where it gets controversial... their feedback isn't just important; it's crucial for shaping the race in March.
"This test is super-important for the series," Rossi emphasized. "With INDYCAR racing getting closer and more dynamic, especially on short ovals, choosing the right tire is key. Our tests directly impact the race product." Dixon added, "INDYCAR and Firestone are working hard to create racing opportunities, and it's great to be a part of that process."
Phoenix Raceway holds a special place in INDYCAR history, with 64 races and iconic winners like A.J. Foyt and Mario Andretti. Both Dixon and Rossi have raced there, with Dixon winning in 2016. However, the track has undergone significant changes since then, including a shift in the start-finish line and the addition of an apron in the dogleg, which NASCAR stock cars can use but INDYCAR cars likely won't.
"Everything has changed since the early 2000s," Dixon noted. "It's like the track has been flipped on its head." Rossi agreed, "I'm still calling it Turns 1 and 2, and Turns 3 and 4."
Despite the differences, both drivers are confident that the upcoming race will be a thrilling spectacle. "It's a cool market to be in," Rossi said. "Everyone loves the Phoenix-Scottsdale area, and it's a great addition to the calendar. It gives drivers a chance to warm up their oval skills before the big one - the Indianapolis 500."
And this is the part most people miss... two INDY NXT graduates, Dennis Hauger and Caio Collet, have also cleared their rookie oval tests, opening doors for their NTT INDYCAR SERIES rookie seasons. They'll be competing in non-Indy 500 oval races next season, starting with Phoenix Raceway in March. Hauger will drive a Honda for Dale Coyne Racing, while Collet will be behind the wheel of the No. 4 AJ Foyt Racing Chevrolet.
"First oval test in an Indycar, and I like the speed!" Hauger exclaimed. Collet added, "A super-nice day, my first time driving an Indy car on an oval and a superspeedway. I enjoyed it a lot."
So, what do you think? Are you excited for the upcoming races? Do you agree that driver feedback is crucial for shaping the race product? We'd love to hear your thoughts in the comments!
