The Roanoke Times, Tuesday, January 7, 2003 B8 Booklet maps out wildlife trail If you're a serious birder or wildlife watcher, you're well aware of the many of the great natural areas available in Western Virginia. It's not so easy for beginners, but help is on the way. The Virginia Birding and Wildlife Trail's western phase is nearing completion. MARK TAYLOR OUTDOORS Modeled after wildly popular programs in other states, the trail is actually a collection of good bird- and wildlifewatching areas. The areas are described and mapped in a handy booklet.
Overseen by the Virginia Department of Game and Inland Fisheries, the project is among the department's more prominent efforts to reach out to nontraditional customers. The department launched the trail's coastal phase last year. The 102-page booklet covering the trail's coastal phase is impressive. It's colorful and packed with easy-to-use maps and descriptions of sites on the trail. It's also free, although donations to the program are encouraged.
To request a booklet, call (804) 367-4335 or e-mail us. When organizers of ginia Beach Striped Bass Championship tournament released the event's catches, the fish at the heap was a 60-pound, behemoth.
The huge landed Dec. 30 by David ston of Suffolk. The fish was than the state's saltwater bass record. The catch more credence to the from many saltwater experts that the striper will fall soon. A couple spawns occurred in the 1980s.

Insurance agent Keith Lerner of Gainesville told Florida Today that the policy was signed and put into effect just prior to the national championship game, the newspaper said.
That last-minute decision could end up securing McGahee's financial future if he's unable to play again. The sophomore rushed for a school-record 1,686 yards and 27 touchdowns this season, and was projected to be a top NFL draft pick had he turned pro early. McGahee sustained a severe injury to his left knee in the fourth quarter of the 31-24 loss to Ohio State in the Fiesta Bowl. McGahee had surgery Sunday at HealthSouth Doctors Hospital, next to the Coral Gables campus. Doctors repaired torn anterior cruciate and medial collateral ligaments and are hopeful he could eventually play again.
If not, he'll get $2.5 million minus taxes, Lerner said. He said McGahee will be eligible to collect Jan. 3, 2004 one year from the date of the injury. Rutgers: Quarterback Ryan Cubit, who started all 11 games in 2001, throwing for 1,433 yards, the most ever by a true freshman at Rutgers, has left the university. There are reports that Cubit plans to attend Western Michigan, where his dad, Rutgers offensive coordinator Bill Cubit, was the offensive coordinator from 1997-99.
Notre Dame: The State Attorney's office will not launch a formal investigation into allegations made by safety Chad DeBolt that Jacksonville police officers injured him. When DeBolt was in Jacksonville with his team for the Gator Bowl, he was arrested and charged with refusing to leave a nightclub. Sheriff Nat Glover ordered an internal investigation after DeBolt's booking photo showed his eyes swollen shut and cuts near his mouth and nose. That investigation is continuing, State Attorney Harry Shorstein said. BASEBALL Phillies hire Manuel Former Cleveland Indians manager Charlie Manuel was hired by the Philadelphia Phillies as a special assistant.
Manuel, fired by the Indians in July, will serve as a roving hitting instructor at both the major league and minor league levels. He will also help general manager Ed Wade evaluate sluggers and will be in uniform, on the bench during some major league games. The Buena Vista native, who turned 59 on Saturday, had a 220- 190 record with the Indians. Hall of Fame: Eddie Murray, with more than 500 home runs and 3,000 hits, is set to become the 38th person picked by the Baseball Writers' Association of America in his first year of eligibility when election results are released today. Murray, Ryne Sandberg and Lee Smith are among 17 players on the ballot for the first time.
Fernando Valenzuela also is on that list and so is Darryl Kile, the St. Louis pitcher who died of heart disease last season. Gary Carter, Jim Rice and Jim Kaat are among the 16 carry-over candidates. So are Bruce Sutter and Goose Gossage, hoping to someday expand the Hall's rank of relievers. It takes 75 percent of the votes to be elected and join the current 254 members.
Braves: Free agent Robert Fick agreed to a $1 million, one-year contract with Atlanta. Fick, 29, was an All-Star last season with the Detroit Tigers, hitting .270 with 17 homers and 63 RBI. Angels: Brad Fullmer agreed to a $1 million, one-year contract with Anaheim. Fullmer hit .289 with 35 doubles, six triples, 19 homers and 49 RBI in 130 games last season. Cardinals: The team finalized oneyear contracts with right-handers Joey Hamilton and Al Levine.
Hamilton, 32, gets $850,000, of which $350,000 is guaranteed. He can earn an additional $500,000 more in performance bonuses. Levine, 34, gets $950,000, of which $600,000 is guaranteed. He can make $400,000 more in performance bonuses. Dodgers: Outfielder Brian Jordan told the team on the first day of winter workouts that he was rescinding his trade demand.
NHL Kings end skid Rookie Joe Corvo scored his first career goal, and the injuryravaged Los Angeles Kings held on for a 3-2 victory over the host Minnesota Wild to end a four-game losing streak. Felix Potvin made 26 saves and Steve Kelly and Brad Chartrand scored for Los Angeles, which was missing six of its top forwards and has seven skaters on injured reserve. The Kings dressed six rookies. Pascal Dupuis and Sergei Zholtok scored for Minnesota, which lost its second straight after a four-game unbeaten streak. Predators 5, Blue Jackets 1: David Legwand and Andreas Johansson each had two goals and an assist as Nashville won in Columbus, Ohio.
Senators 5, Rangers 2: Marian Hossa scored twice, and Magnus Arvedson snapped a third-period tie as Ottawa won in New York. Devils: Forward Brian Gionta will be sidelined two-to-three weeks with a broken right leg. Gionta was hit in the leg Friday night by a shot from Devils captain Scott Stevens in a game against Toronto. ETC. No Bull 5 is no more R.J.
Reynolds Tobacco Com- pany announced that it is discontinuing the Winston No Bull 5 program, which offered Winston Cup drivers and fans a chance to win a million dollars each at selected races. Five Winston Cup races each year offered the No Bull 5 bonus. The top five finishers in the previous No Bull 5 race were eligible for a $1 million bonus if they won the race. Each of the five participants was paired with a fan chosen in a random drawing. If the fan's driver won the race, the fan also collected $1 million.
There were at least two winners each season. The decision to drop the bonus program, which began in 1998, does not affect RJR's sponsorship of NASCAR's elite division, the Winston Cup Series. PGA Tour: Tiger Woods has been named the PGA Tour player of the year for the fourth consecutive season. Woods won five times on tour last year, including the first two majors, and he won the money title for the fourth straight year. No one else won more than two tour events in 2002.
USTA resignations: Rick Ferman resigned as executive director and chief operating officer of the United States Tennis Association. He will continue in his position until a successor is chosen. The USTA also announced the resignation of Nick Saviano as director of coaching education for the USA Tennis high performance program..
